This is one of those prototypes about which little is known. It is reputed to have been used by Colonel Stephens as an inspection lorry travelling by road between his various railways, but at the same time carried a set of rail wheels for traveling along the tracks. It arrived at the Selsey Tramway about the same time as the Wolseley Siddeley Railmotor and reputedly was coupled back to back with that unit for a time. At some later stage it was transferred to the Shrophshire and Montgomershire Railway where it was reunited with the Wolseley, but the latter was no longer a railmotor, but a trailer. The trailer was made by mounting the Wolseley body an old four wheel tram car chassis.
The 7mm kit will be as complete as possible per our usual specification and although transfers are not required, we will produce what is required for the freelance builder, or for those with modeller's licence!
The product will be available from us, first in 7mm and when the design has been established, with a test build, a 4mm vesion will be produced subject to demand.Click on this link to see Ford Railmotor photograghs of the 7mm test build. Scroll down to the bottom to see the front of the motor unit and the chassis. The Lorry will have the same engine bonnet, radiator and mudguard castings. However there will NOT BE ANY internal cab detailing.
The kit will be available as a stand alone unit or with combinations of the Wolseley Siddeley to suit modellers' requirements:
7mm Kit specification is as follows:
Please note, due to the very small size of the model, and the fact that it is of a very open
construction, motorisation will be an issue. Indeed it may not be possible to motorise the unit unless a motor is
hidden under a large load on the tray (unprototypical?). It may therefore only be possible to use it as a
trailer vehicle. However, there may be a number of ways to motorise this kit and we are not
putting forward ideas or recommending systems, as there are regular major changes in the (parts) market place
and products available today may not be available tomorrow.
The kit has therefore been developed as a rolling chassis.
PLEASE NOTE : the 4mm kit does not include castings or extras. It is a strictly etches only kit though with full instructions. A sophisticated scratch builders aid? There are NO castings, though we supply etches that can be used as aids in scratchbuilding. Specifically this refers to the front wheel mudguards and the bonnet / radiator front. The engine would have to be carved up from a (very small!) piece of styrene or whatever. There are no cab details.
For narrow gauge (freelance) specification, contact us with your requirement. It may be that the kit will be suitable for your gauge as it is - due to the design of the prototype - or we could offer an alternative chassis.
